To Europe’s cloud providers: The time to act is now.

Wolke, die die europäische Flagge abbildet und die Beschriftung "SECA" trägt. Zum Thema European cloud sovereignty

Dear colleagues, partners, and fellow builders of Europe’s digital future,

The question of Europe’s digital sovereignty is no longer theoretical – it is existential.
Today, I write to you not only as a peer, but with an urgent call: let’s build something bigger together – for Europe, and from Europe.

For too long, the narrative has been dominated by a handful of global players. They’ve rebranded their infrastructure as “sovereign” while remaining governed by laws far from European values and jurisdictions. This isn’t sovereignty – it’s sovereignty-washing. And Europe deserves better.

Achim Weiß, CEO IONOS Group

We have the talent, the infrastructure, the experience – and above all, the responsibility – to offer a real alternative.

With the launch of SECA API, we are laying the groundwork for a truly open, secure, interoperable, and sovereign cloud ecosystem – one that meets the requirements of the Digital Markets Act, the Digital Services Act, and the AI Act, and that protects the rights of businesses and citizens across Europe.

The adoption of SECA by the many as a standard API to connect our services, will create true interoperability, enable the creation of skills and certification on a common European standard, reduce technical and commercial boundaries between us, support the creation of true marketplaces for European solutions, to simplify and boost the adoption of our solutions by system integrators and end users.

But SECA API is not a solo effort –  and it was never meant to be.

It is a foundation:

  • For a EuroStack, developed by European providers, designed for European needs.
  • For a collaborative framework turned into RFC – that makes it easy to interconnect and build on top of each other’s strengths – rather than fighting for fragments of a market already skewed by concentration and dependency.
  • For a cloud model rooted in openness, reversibility, and independence – not lock-in and opacity.

As competitors, we’ve each carved our space.
As European cloud providers, we now face a shared responsibility – and a shared opportunity.

Let’s stop trying to compete with hyperscalers on their terms, and start leading on ours.
Let’s prove that European collaboration is not a compromise – it’s our competitive edge.

I invite you to join us in shaping SECA API and the EuroStack initiative – not as a passive standard, but as an active, living ecosystem of providers, committed to a common goal: a strong, sovereign, independent digital Europe.

If we don’t build it, someone else will.
And it won’t be built on our terms.

Sincerely,
Achim Weiß

CEO, IONOS
